Avandia
FDA safety reviewers are urging a recall of the drug Avandia® due to increased risk of heart attacks. This call for the diabetes drug recall came after a congressional hearing addressing the safety of Avandia® concluded that GlaxoSmithKline knew that the drug could cause Heart Damage several years before a medical study documented the reports. US Senators commented that the company pressured doctors into retracting warnings about the side effects.

Usage:
Rosiglitazone is an anti-diabetic drug from the thiazolidinedione class. It is being marketed as Avandia by the pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline, both as a standalone preparation and in combination with metformin (Avandamet). Another combination drug approved by the FDA is Avandaryl (with glimepiride).
Approved by the FDA in 1999, Avandia was thought to be successful in controlling blood sugar in adults with type-2 diabetes. Type-2 diabetes develops when the pancreas cannot produce enough insulin, or the body''s tissues become resistant to insulin. The disease, which used to be called adult-onset diabetes or non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, can be treated without using insulin.
