Saudi FDA Removes Avandia From the Market
According to a Dow Jones report, Saudi Arabia has suspended GlaxoSmithKline PLC's (GSK) diabetes drug Avandia from the market for six months. The Saudi authorities found that Avandia's heart risks did not outweigh its benefits.
The Saudi Food and Drug Authority posted on its website that the risks of Avandia "outweighs its benefit, especially risks of cardiovascular events including myocardial infarction and congestive heart failure in addition to increased risk of fractures."
This comes at a time when many in the United States are demanding that the FDA issue an Avandia recall. More than 14,000 civil cases have been filed in the United States seeking compensation for injuries alleged to have been caused by Avandia. That number is expected to grow as filing deadlines approach.
