DePuy Hip Replacement Recall
DePuy Hip Replacement Recall! After mounting pressure, industry leader Johnson & Johnson's, Depuy Orthopedics, division has issued a WORLDWIDE RECALL of it's ASR XL Acetabular System for Total Hip Repalcement. The recall comes after more than 93,000 units had been sold. Johnson & Johnson earned 5.4 billion dollars from the sales of the product. New data has revealed that the hip replacement systems have an alarmingly high rate of failure. Studies show that within 5 years 12% of patients (1 in 8 ) who had received DePuy’s ASR resurfacing device and 13% of patients (1 in 8 ) who had received DePuy’s ASR total hip replacement needed to have surgery to repair the devices. Because of the devices "metal-on-metal" design, the hip implants can shed particles into the patient causing serious, painful reactions, often leading to further surgery. The unique "metal on metal" design once touted by DePuy may cause a number of different ailments and symptoms which patients should be made aware of.
Symptoms may include:
- Loosening, when the implant does not stay attached to the bone in the right position
- Fracture, where the bone around the implant may have broken;
- Dislocation where the two parts of the implant that move against each other are no longer aligned;
- pain and swelling around the hip, caused by metal shavings.
